As a boy, Walter Lantz’ Woody Woodpecker cartoons were my favorites. What I loved about the cartoons, I love about this story. The line work is loose and the characters look alive. You know what else is cool? Buzzy Buzzard. He was so cool. He must have been a ball to draw as well.
I also loved the colors. I guess it was Woody’s vibrant crest color, but all Woody comics were like fauvist paintings. Also, I love the panels without borders, relying instead on a swath of color in the background to frame the characters. It really gives the overall page a feeling of wonderful space. Sadly, the artist is uncredited. This is from Four Color (Sometimes called Dell Four Color) No. 390, April, 1952; and the scans come from my own comic.
