Li'l Bad Wolf in "Funnel Trap" and
Donald Duck in "Ten-Star Generals"

Here is work from two masters featured in Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories #132, September 1951 (Carl Barks' cover). First is Harvey Eisenberg’s take on Li’l Bad Wolf. Eisenberg is best remembered for his Hanna-Barbera work; but he did his share of Disney characters for Western Publishing as well. I love the action line dwelling within these loose, round characters.

It is often said that Carl Barks’ comic book stories were for adults as well as children. What made that true were not his themes or his command of language (although both were very sophisticated); rather there was an assumed level of reader intelligence in his work that made children feel like adults. In the last panel on page 3, Huey stares straight at the reader with a look of flat trust and mutual understanding.

the Barks story is great! I love how he drew smugness with the two little u-shaped closed eyes.

David: I think "smugness" was Barks' best expression! -- Mykal

They sell a complete set of Barks' duck comics reprints (I think by Gladstone) and I've been coveting them for years. You are right they are very smart stories.

He did a lot of painting too after he retired and I've been searching everywhere for a book of collected paintings. Maybe nothing like that exists. I haven't had any luck so far.

His painting were beautiful. He worked in oil. He did a series of his most famous covers in oil, the originals of which are rarely offered for sale. I managed to grab some nice prints a few years ago (not even the prints were cheap). I have them framed and in both office and home. -- Mykal

If I ever find out those are real sheep jumping over me~ I'll do more than count them ! Poor Unca Donald, demoted yet again !

Lysdexicuss: I know! Man, that would be one grueling dream. Regarding Donald, the poor guy/duck wouldn't even tell what rank he had when a Boonehead. Thank heavens his nephews look out for him. -- Mykal
