FRANKENSTEIN COMICS -
"How I Became a Genii In a Magic Bottle"

Kids and friends, it's time for another selection from the Karswell Kollection! Normally, friend Karswell prefers the shadow world of pre-code horror comics. His blog, THE HORRORS OF IT ALL, is a four-color museum of said work. Do like I do. Read every post. All the cool kids read THOIA!

But Karswell loves kids' comics! He has a swell collection of fun stuff in his Kollection and, like any good kid, he likes to share. This is from Frankenstein Comics no. 5, November/December 1946. The artist is Dick Briefer, whose rich inks are so relaxed, bold, and unbound by fuss; his creation screams happy!

Want to see Briefer's darker vision of Frankenstein? Thought so. Then visit Karswell's cross-post, "The Ghoul." Just click HERE!

  6. Briefer is such a genius; his imagination never fails to impress. While the second half of this one devolved (slightly) into a fairly predictable I Love Lucy-style boys vs. girls Vaudville routine, that certainly didn't bother me too much after such a super perfect set-up chock full of all the comic whimsy and well positioned surreality one might expect from the very best kid lit.

Thank you for posting it, Mykal.

  7. Mr. Cavin: The pleasure was all mine. "Whimsy" is a good word to describe Briefer, whose humor in the Frankenstein stuff had such a pleasurable, feathery touch. Also, oh! That brushwork! Thanks for stopping by! -- Mykal

  8. Thanks again to Mykal for helping me get back to blogging in style with dueling Frankenstein posts! For you full issue completists and anyone else interested, there's only one more story from this giant sized Frankenstein issue that has not been posted yet, hopefully I'll get to it later this month or next month... check out the THOIA Archive for more.

  10. Dick Briefer's versions of Frankenstein have to be among the strangest, yet best comic-book horror tales.
He was a guest of honor at one of the GB Love MiamiCons in the mid-1970s.
