Mr. Magoo in "Invasion From Mars"

"Invasion From Mars" showcases the beautifully effortless work of Cecil Surry. Surry worked for Disney and Walter Lance Studios during the 30s, and drew comics for Western Publishing through the 40s and 50s. During the 1950s, he animated for UPA as well, primarily on Magoo cartoons.

"Invasion From Mars" appeared in Gerald McBoing Boing and the Nearsighted Mr. Magoo No. 1, August-October, 1952. For those interested in the Gerald story from same issue, click HERE!

Coming next post we have another Mr. Magoo story from this same issue; this time by Dan Gormley!

  1. I especially love page four with the swirling fish in the bowl. So, this comic preceded the animated cartoon by quite a few years, eh ? Hard not to hear Jim Bacchus' voice while reading the dialog~!

  2. Lysdexicuss: My favorite part is when he things he sees a dwarf in the mirror and just blasts away.

Yes, this comic was long before the television cartoons. Surry's animimation work was for UPA's theatrical shorts, two of which won oscars - "When Magoo Flew" (1955), and "Magoo's Puddle Jumper" (1956). Surry passed away in 1956. The television cartoon was in the 1960s.

  4. KW: The tv cartoon (that we all know and love) was well after this comic and the theatrical shorts. The theatrical shorts cartoons from UPI came before everything and were the first incarnation of the character (late 1940s).
