Howie Post from Animal Antics No. 15!

Hi, Kids! Today we have a story featuring Presto Pete the Magic Bunny with artwork from one of my favorite cartoonists, Howie Post! This story comes from Animal Antics No. 15 (July-August 1948).

Mr. Post is perhaps best remembered for his work in the 1950s and 1960s for Harvey Comics, drawing many Hot Stuff, the Little Devil and Spooky the Tuff Little Ghost stories. His work always makes me so happy! It is so robust, lively – the characters always seem so animated and alive, never stiff. He was just a master of bigfoot cartooning. Can you tell I am a big fan?

This is one of the oldest stories I’ve been able to find penciled and inked by Howie Post, and I’m excited to share it today with you kids. The script was written by Jack Mendelsohn (who went on later in life to write for Rowan and Martin’s Laugh In, The Carol Burnett Show, and many other television programs).

Heck, I’ll throw in the cover free of charge!

I will see you all again very soon. Until then, I hope you are all warm, safe, and happy! --Your friend, Mykal

Just for fun, let's throw in an advertisement from Schwinn Bicycles from this same issue!

Next post, I'll share some more stories fom Animal Antics with the artwork of Rube Grossman!

Mel Crawford's Big Red!

Hi, Kids! As promised last post, today we have some more beautiful artwork from the great Mel Crawford featured in the 1962 Little Golden Book, Walt Disney’s Big Red.

Big Red tells the story of a big Irish Setter, owned by a wealthy man and kept in his kennel of ribbon-winning show dogs. Like all dogs, however, Big Red needed a kid! This story is adopted beautifully by Kathleen N. Daly from the Disney move of the same name. Ms. Daly was an editor at Little Golden Books in the 1960s and penned many of the stories.

I love Little Golden Books. The artwork was (and still is) exquisite. Just look at this series of beautiful paintings by Mr. Crawford!

I hope all you kids are having a great holiday season. I will see you all again very soon. Until then, I hope you are all warm, safe, and happy!

Next up, some work from one of my all-time favorite cartoonists, Howie Post!

Merry Christmas From the Littlest Snowman!

It is the holiday season, kids! I know you have all be good this year.

This year we have a famous Christmas story by Charles Tazewell, The Littlest Snowman Rescues Christmas, adopted for comics by Gaylord Du Bois (script) and Mel Crawford (art). From FOUR COLOR No. 864 (December 1957).

There is so much to love in this story beginning with the superb, pure draftsmanship of Mel Crawford. His work is always deceptively simple, pure, uncluttered, and perfect.

Also perfect is the story of the littlest snowman who understands that love, the spirit of Christmas, has the power to thaw all the coldness of the world. Watch how our snowman can enlist all of Mankind, from the humblest of children to the men who stride the corridors of power, in his mission of Christmas (and, of course, the animals of the fields lend their loving support).

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas, kids! I hope these holidays find you warm, safe, and happy! – Your friend, Mykal

I will see you all again very soon, kids! This post got me into a Mel Crawford frame of mind! I will next post a Little Golden Book Mr. Crawford illustrated in 1962 called "Big Red." You are going to love it!
