Superkatt in "Best Actor for 1947"

This is the work of Dan Gordon. I am far from alone in loving Gordon's work, as his reputation has grown to that of legend in recent years. His beautiful, perfect use of shadow give his characters such life and elastic bounce. Gordon's work often feels like a prototype for good cartooning.

Gordon also did the cover. Much more will be said about Gordon's many gifts in future posts. For now, this is from Giggle Comics No. 46, October, 1947. All scans are from my own comic. Just click the image for the big picture.

  1. What a hoot! I had never seen Giggle Comics before. I think Humphrey is the real star (what's with the bonnet and diaper on Superkatt???). Love the caricature of Hope & Crosby on page 1. Humphrey kind of reminds me of Meathead in the Screwball Squirrel cartoons by Avery. Did you catch the LSMFT (Lucky Strike Means fine Tobacco) add in place of the Train Line name. Why wasn't I born a collie instead of handsome... my new motto.

  2. R/E" I had NOT caught the LSMFT ad on page 3 - good one! Superkatt was a crime fighting cat that wore a diaper, blue baby bonnet, and big blue bow tie as a uniform. Why? A spoof on the glut of superhero animal (SuperMouse, Atomic Mouse, Super Rabbit) in the 1940s? I don't know. Just Gordon's genius. -- Mykal

  3. Cool! Dan Gordon is one of my new fave artists! He draws as you say, with just the right touches to make his characters look solid and real, very funny stuff! I first saw this pair on a Pappy post and fell in luv! Thanks!

  4. Apocolyte: Gordon was awesome (and I don't use that term lightly). I think I first saw Gordon's stuff a few years ago (I believe) on John K's animation/cartoon blog. I, too, fell head over heals. -- Mykal

  5. This comic is great! Love Superkatt and especially love Humphrey; he reminds me of the dog from that Looney Tunes short, "Ding Dog Daddy."
