Fractured Fairy Tales October 1962

Fractured Fairy Tales (the cartoon), for those that may not know, appeared as a feature on the great Rocky and Bullwinkle Show (Jay Ward, creator - 1959-1964). The following stories, adapted from the wonderful cartoons, appeared in Fractured Fairy Tales No. 1 (of 1). Al Kilgore, who normally drew all the Bullwinkle and Rocky titles for Dell and Gold Key, only did the cover here and the story scripts. The artwork is actually Mel Crawford (Grand Comic Book Database).

  1. 1) didn't know there was a FFT comic and 2) Sundays and Gold Key are a perfect combination!
an excellent adaptation, by the way.

  3. I didn't know about this either... very cool, although a big part of the FF appeal for me is the great voice acting in the cartoons.

  4. Karswell: Absolutely no question. The voice actors for FFT and the Rocky and Bullwinkle show absolutely put this show over the top. In reading this comic, I kept hearing the cartoon voices: Paul Frees, Julie Bennet, etc. I think I will post the rest of this comic just to remember the cartoon!

  6. this is a fun comic book. Although I'm not big on improvised covers with large type, this works wonderfully and really attracts your attention. Good stuff all the way around.

  7. Gary! So nice to hear from you. Yeah, I agree - the cover is a bit "type heavy" but is saved through good layout. Also, it is the only place Al Kilgore's art appears save the back cover.

  8. This looks great! The colored panel borders really add to the "modern" cartoon look. Kudos to Gold Key for going the extra mile during production for doing that!

Would LOVE to see more Al Kilgore stuff here, Mykal. Just sayin'... :^D

  9. Bill: Those "border-less panels" were a Gold Key trademark. I always liked that look, too.

Yep, we are on the same page about Kilgore - I'm on the hunt!

  12. Mykal--i've had this comic for years and love it's faithfulness to the style/art of the actual cartoons. I see a number of people didn't know about it's existence,soooo-i'm really glad you posted it and hope you'll be putting up the rest of it.
Interestingly, the artwork in this comic is even better (at least in my opinion) than the R&B comics for the most part. keep up the good work--------DJA
