Andy Panda and the Police Pup!

Let's follow up last post with some more Dan Gormely - this time cartooning an Andy Panda story from Four Color No. 216, February 1949. Kevin Langely of Cartoons, Model Sheets, and Stuff; has commented in a previous post on Gormely's luxurious inking, and I couldn't agree more. His easy, bouncy drawing is pretty swell, too. Page after page of top flight stuff. And, as is always the case with Gormely, what a magnificent cover!

Here come two more of those famous Dell one-color, front and back inside covers!

  1. It's a shame next to nothing is known about Gormley. I wonder if he had a background in animation? (Thanks for the plug Mykal)

  2. Kevin: I've been contacting anyone and everyone I know about Gormely, and he really is a man of mystery. All that seems to be known about him comes from his trail of work. Looking at his work, his panel staging and elastic movement, etc.; one can easily imagine animation work - but nope. No one ever records him working as an animator.

As you say. A shame. He really was a great cartoonist. I'd love a collection.

  3. Good Gravy, but did DELL ever deliver the goods for a thin U.S. dime!!

Most popular comics house of all time? Not for nothin', and then some!!

  6. Mykal,

I too, can find absolutely NO information on this guy!

Maybe he was some really talented "fine" artist, who just dabbled in comics to make ends meet?

Whatever, this stuff is a JOY to look at.

  7. Hi, Bill: No, he was a comic book guy all the way. From about 1940 to early 60s - hundreds of comics for Dell and other company (mostly funny animals for Dell). - according to some bio info sent to me by comic book historian, Alberto Becattini. He died in Albany, NY (again, curtesy of Alberto's info) in 1976.

  8. Mykal.....Are you sure it was by Dan Gormely, I was told that the New Funnies were drawin' by Dick Hall an old animation artist from the 30's and 40's. I'm a huge fan of this artwork, I also work in animation and looking at these drawings they just SCREAM animation extremes, the animators key drawings. Do you know anything about Dick Hall?

  9. MrMagoo: I think it's Dan Gormley - that certainly looks like his Andy to me. Of course, I am certainly not infallible (an understatement). Any opinions are welcome!
