Four Color No. 226 - 1949

To my shame I am not very familiar with the work of Roger Armstrong, the artist responsible for the fluid, richly-detailed work in this story. Artist ID comes from pal Alberto Becattini via Grand Comics Database. For more about this great artist, please read Mark Evanier's tribute at the time of Armstrong's passing in 2007. As for the beautiful cover, (most likely) it's the work of Ralph Heimdahl.

  1. This one really captured the rich vernacular of the 1940's. 'Spoofy' looked like a criminal version of Elmer Fudd. When he wore the sheet, his profile resembled Pogo ! So glad you posted this and I got to read the whole thing before losing power ;~j

  3. Roger Armstrong's work is so clean, you have to wonder if a dozen or so artists touched it up and clean it up. But, it was all him. Great movement and clear, expressive faces. I'm a fan.

  5. Roger Armstrong was amazing! Why is he not regarded as a master of the form like Barks and Eisenberg?

Commenting from a cell phone. Safe and fine after Sandy, but 7 days with no power! Them's the breaks!

  6. Joe: I agree - Armstrong's work is on a par with the all time greats. So sorry about Super Storm Sandy, but glad your loved ones are safe.

  8. John: I think I do. I'll have a look around. I love the way he draws humans - like the real estate agent and the cops. Very unique and lively.

I picked up a 1950 issue of Porky on the weekend, but he wasn't in there.

  11. John: I just got in a couple myself. I have a Porky Pig (four Color 284) from July of 1950 that has the Work of Armstrong (I believe); and a Merrie Melodies (Four Color 71) from Sept of 1947. I'll post them both very soon.
